While initially beloved in her home of Macon, GA, people grew suspicious when members of her family mysteriously started dying off after inexplicable illnesses. Anjette's story is the subject of the book, WHISPER TO THE BLACK CANDLE, by Jaclyn White. Former restaurant owner turned arsenic muderess, she was convicted of poisoning two husbands, her mother in law, and her oldest daughter, Marcia.
Lyles, Anjette Donovan (23 August 1925–04 December 1977), restaurateur and multiple murderer, was born in Macon, Georgia, the only daughter of Jetta Watkins and William Donovan, who owned and operated a produce company. In 1947, Anjette Lyles and WWII Army veteran Ben Lyles ran a successful restaurant in Macon, Georgia. Anjette’s shining personality and beautiful face kept the customers coming back. One judge remembered his experience at the restaurant and claimed she was just a nice person. Anjette Lyles was a glamourous figure and spectators stood in line for hours, hoping for just a glance of the defendant.
